Medgar Evers College is a college campus of The City University of New York, located in Brooklyn, which is the most populous borough in New York City, as well as the second largest in area, housing within its limits a number of approximately 2.5 million people.
The college was established in 1969 and gets its name from Medgar Wiley Evers, a Mississippi-born black civil rights activist. Medgar Evers is academically organized into 4 schools (The School of Business; The School of Professional and Community Development; The School of Liberal Arts and Education; and The School of Science, Health, and Technology), through which it offers its students baccalaureate and associate degree programs, as well certificate programs, the college offering, as well, study abroad programs in Brazil, France, Senegal and Spain.
The athletic teams at Medgar Evers are nicknamed the Cougars and they compete in NCAA Division III, as members of the City University of New York Athletic Conference (or CUNYAC).
Since it first opened its doors to students, Medgar Evers College has produced thousands of notable alumni, among them also being Carl Andrews, former New York State Senator, Rev. Dr. Iyanla Vanzant, author and television personality, and Yvette Clarke, Congresswoman, member of the United States House of Representatives from New York's 11th congressional district.
